Department of Medicine

Department of Medicine is one of the major departments of Ali Fatima Teaching Hospital, AUMDC, Lahore. It has 130 beds allocated for Internal Medicine and 10 beds for a state-of-the-art Medical ICU with a fully equipped independent High Dependency Unit (HDU). Medical Department receives emergencies round the clock. All types of medical patients are admitted through the emergency and OPD on a daily basis. All the OPD clinics are run under the supervision of consultants.

This department is equipped with all facilities to train young doctors, paramedical staff, and medical students.

Following academic activities are in practice in this unit:

1. Journal Club Meeting on weekly basis,
2. Grand Round/ Case Presentation once a week,
3. Academic Discussion of Important Topics every Tuesday,
4. Monthly Mortality Meeting
5. Clinico Pathological Conference (CPC), every month

Department of Medicine also has the following subspecialties affiliated with the unit:

1. Nephrology
2. Gastroenterology
3. Cardiology
4. Pulmonology

Affiliation of all these specialties with the department of medicine helps in providing the best environment for teaching & training of both undergraduate & postgraduate students along with optimal patient care.

Recently, the Unit has started Upper and Lower GI Endoscopy for Diagnostic and Therapeutic purposes. It will provide an excellent opportunity for learning for Postgraduate Students in the subject of Gastroenterology.

Head of the department

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq is the Head of Department of Medicine, Ali Fatima Teaching Hospital, AUMDC, Lahore. After graduating from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, he completed his Membership from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, in Internal Medicine. He acquired his Doctorate in the field of Gastroenterology from the Punjab University, Lahore. He has a vast experience of teaching both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students while working at various public and private institutions across Punjab. He is also a bona fide supervisor for Gastroenterology at CPSP. He is an examiner and paper-setter for the University of Health Sciences, Lahore, for MD Internal Medicine. Presently, he is also the Chairperson of Specialty Advisory Committee for Internal Medicine at UHS. He has been regularly participating in various workshops, conferences and teaching programs both locally and internationally. He has numerous research publications in both local as well as international journals.

He retired from Services Institute of Medical Sciences, Lahore, as Head of Department, Medical Special Unit, and Gastroenterologist.
